About E. John Robinson
John Robinson (1922-2008) was an American artist renowned for his seascapes. Born April 14, 1932, in Grants Pass, Oregon, E. John grew up in Oregon.
Education
He earned his bachelor's degree in education from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He earned his master's degree from San Francisco State College in San Francisco, California.
Teaching experience
Told that no one could make a living as an artist, E. John taught in the public school system for 12 years before becoming a full-time artist. He settled down in Mendocino, on the northern California coast, where the Pacific Ocean provided great inspiration for his art.
Success in art
John became one of the world's finest seascape artists. During his art career, he painted more than 4,000 seascapes and had his work featured in four "Reader's Digest" covers.
He wrote many instructional books as well as produced a series of best-selling videos. E. John was delighted to share his painting expertise with students around the world.
Community spirit
John joined service organizations like the Rotary Club of Mendocino, where he founded the Annual Art Auction, and painted an ocean mural behind the altar at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Mendocino. He enjoyed gardening, became a master gardener, and volunteered his gardening and design talents to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg, California.
In giving back to the community, E. John donated many works to area fundraising auctions. Later in life, E. John became an avid wildflower photographer as well as a creative fiction writer, mostly with short stories.
Death
John died November 18, 2008, in Mendocino, California, surrounded by his family. His sly wit, generous nature, and independent spirit are still missed by his family and wide circle of friends.
He was survived by his wife of 55 years, June Robinson; children, Kathy McDonald (husband, Michael) of Mendocino and Karen Wilson (husband, Tom) of Portland; and grandchildren, Ashley Schwab (husband, Matt) of Portland and T.J. Wilson, of Portland.
Legacy
John continues to live for art students around the world through the gentle yet professional guidance he provides in his painting lessons on DVD.
